All "progress" is considered to be material related by the West. The eastern view of progress which is spelt out in the Puranas is the seeking of peace through permanence.
Western View Purana's View | |
Control of external forces for physical comfort and material gain is considered a primary purpose of our intellectual energy. Attaining control of the physical world is considered the same as intellectual advancement. | The external world is considered to be a product of one's Karma. It is a teaching tool that is to be used to learn about the self. Renunciation of the pleasures and products of the physical world are prescribed as the paths to attaining Moksham and avoiding reincarnation. |
To reach a higher plane means to move to a better environment while carrying the same needs and perceptions for self satisfaction. In other words, it is believed that the attachment to the senses and the experiencing of physical comfort and pleasure is made long lasting while the negative aspects such as stress, uncertainty, insecurity, physical discomfort etc. can be eliminated. | The physical environment is understood to be a transient illusion..
The higher plane means that the present sense perceptions as well as desires, pleasures, worldly possessions and all other mechanisms associated with the self ("I") are dropped. This advanced state of existence is characterized by permenance, with no conflicts, no experience of pleasure and pain, no births and deaths. Perception is selfless.
|
Pursuit of happiness and satisfaction through accumulation of material wealth. Material accumulation and happiness are seen as the ultimate desirable states of existence.
|
Possession of material wealth restricted to only essentials necessary for sustenance. No interest in pursuing wealth beyond minimum requirements.Dispassionate discharge of Karma without looking to the results of actions is prescribed . |
Attain gratification through social recognition. The recognition is used as a tool for self gratification. Obtaining desired results of efforts expended towards material and physical possessions signal success. This "success" provides satidfaction and reinforces of one's superiority over fellow beings.
Knowledge of the material world is considered the only useful knowledge. Knowledge of the material world is pursued with the belief that the answers and the knowledge gained will lead to an understanding of the origins and life and in the process unlock nature's secrets which will help solve the problems of the world and lead to a more fruitful existence, with unending material comfort.
Physical/Chemical/Electrical impulses trigger the thought process and the flow of thoughts can be rationalized/explained by tracing the pattern of these impulses. Control of the thought process is also possible through chemicals/electricity/medication.
Gain Control and experience pleasure by manipulating physical forces.Need for pleasures of this world can never be satiated. The Paramathma clearly states that anyone that needs to be punished will be given all the comforts in the world to enjoy. This takes them on a never ending path of demand for more and more, and pushes them into a Karmic cycle of rebirth.
Worldly knowledge is limited by Time and Space and Perceptive abilities. Based on the past and extending into the future.
|
Success feeds the EGO and Failure creates doubts and conflict. Both are perceived as by-products of the discharge of Karma, and of which the individual should not take ownership. The results of one's actions are dedicated to Easwara.
Knowledge of the self, as it relates to the methods of attaining Easwara is considered the key and all other forms of knowledge are considered incidental.
Knowledge of the material world is considered worthless because the objective of transcending the world is said to occur via the self control of the mind itself and not through physical forces. The physical forces are recognized as instrumental in the creation and sustenance of the thought process but not its utilization
The control and evolution of the thought process can only occur by withdrawing the mind from the physical world and its limitations and focusing it steadily on Easwara. Control the mind to move away from physical pleasures. Give up a desire driven existence and pursue realization of the self.
True knowledge of the self releases the Atma from all Space and Time related limitations. True knowledge is unlimited and unbounded. Seeks knowledge which is unlimited by Time, space and point of reference.
Seek Permenance through evolution of the thought process. Discard the physical limitations imposed by the perceived world.
