Western Concepts | Puranas View |
The intelligence of an individual is linked to two aspects - one is the genetic factor, which is presumed to be unchanging during the lifetime. The other is the acquisition of worldly skills that helps maintain the natural abilities from waning and also helps build the worldly knowledge base. It is the latter on which the emphasis on development is placed. |
The Puranas primary aim is to liberate intelligence from self imposed shackles and elevate the thought process and percpective abilities to the highest possible level. This is accomplished through self realization by turning the thought process onto itself. Invoking the blessings of Easwara is a primary requirement for this self analysis. Unlocking the mind means quietening it off its fears and ambitions and listening to the messages flowing in from above. |
The development of intelligence and skills is confined to the limitations of the senses and to the perceived properties of the physical universe. Essentially it is restricted to the observable worldly objects. | The process of evolution starts by side stepping the limitations of the senses and turning attention instead to identification of the roots and origin of the thought process. The external world leads the mind down an unending path of opposites which goes around in repetitive circles. This circle is the result of the distortions in the mind that makes it bounce between the opposites. |
States of happiness and pleasure are desired, while unhappiness and pain are to be discarded. Much of intelligent effort is directed towards drawing maximizing happiness and pleasure. If necessary, Chemicals are used to impact thoughts (such as anti depressants and mood elevators such as caffeine). | The Puranas are categorical that happiness, pleasure, and their opposites are actually manifestations of the false identity "I" or the Ego within us. The true state, is represented by the relinquishement of the false identity. Once this occurs, the mind will not be subjected to the experience of these emotions. The true permenant state of bliss and eternal tranquility will then be attained. |
Accumulation of Knowledge of the external world and physical phenomena are considered to be positive signs of intellectual development. Desire for worldly knowledge and happiness are also considered a positive progression of the thought process. Disinterest is considered as requiring attention. | Worldly Knowledge is to be interpreted and understood only as a pointer to the inner self. Quietening the flow of thoughts, eliminating worldly desires, controlling the thought process from projecting the self and seeking transient pleasures, constitues true knowledge and release from the bondage of Karmic forces. |
Intelligence is used to assert the supremacy of the self through expanding ownership, developing relationships and seeking success in worldy endevours. | Seeks Iswara in the place of the self. Affirmation of Easwara through giving. Physical world events are predetermined by Karmic forces, which can be controlled only by the self control of the thought process. |
Satisfaction is a series of expanding requirements from the material world. Seeks and appreciates praise and love as an affirmation of the self. | The nexus between seeking of worldly pleasures and comforts and mental satisfaction is sought to be disconnected. Seeking is sought to be restricted to only the seeking of Easwara by unravelling the cobwebs in the mind. Satisfaction starts and stops at Realization. |
