It is very important that the role of the Intellect is clearly understood in the larger scheme of things. Let us start with consciousness. The ability to percoeve or be conscious of the objects of the external world depends on the ability of the mind to split pure consciousness into two opposing parts and then subdivide each of these fragments into sub parts that are the opposites of each other and so on. Differentiation, and then the unification of the different parts causes perception. The ability of the mind to split the whole into compnents, and identify the attributes of each components is the function and power and ability of that aspect of the mind which is called the intellect.
Having split the whole into component parts, the intellect then discovers the relationships between the different components. In discovering relationships, the mind is trying to arrange the objects into an hierrarchy of which is the superior and which are the inferior attributes. In other words, the imtellect orders the people, objects and events into those which are independant (superior) and which are the dependant (inferior). Expressed differently, the intellect arranges the identified attributes that act as the cause and those attributes that are nothing more than effects of the cause.
The purpose of this differentiation and arrangement of the parts in an heirarchy is to find out that whicn is the ultimate cause and which of the parts is only an effect that depends for its existence on the cause. Having identified the effects, the mind now chooses to completely eliminate the effects and focus only on the causes since the intellect does not consder any object with attributes that are only EFFECTS, The objects or events that are causes are the ones that the intellect focuses on because it associates the case with power to influence all others. Since some of the lower lavel causes may depend on other higher causes, the intellect stratifies the causes, arranges them in a heirarchy of incresing power
The idea of the itellect in this arracgement, is to identy and know the supreme cause and consciousness of each cinoibebt. That which is right at the top with absolutely no dependancies and can create the objects out of sheer independant will power is the supreme force behind the universe which is sought to be attained by the mind/consciousness.
The implication is that the process of differentiation, elimination and identification is so involved that in the process of discovery, the discoverer will itself undergo changes to such an extent that the discoverer will actually \become exactly equal to the supreme attribute and beonce one with the supreme being (the Paramathma).
So in this way the seeker attains Moksham or permenance and beomes one with the Paramathma.
