The mind is an endowment that we are blessed with along with the senses. Most importantly the mind is also endowed with the qualities of Desire, Possessiveness, attachment, Greed, ability to enjoy sense pleasures etc.
The Sanskrit terminology for these endowments are: Kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and mātsarya—lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride and envy. These endowments are born out off an even more fundemental endowment known as DESIRE.
The forces of consciousness, mind, and the minds components - memory and intellect are linked through this fundemental and primeval factor known as DESIRE.
Desire in the mind manifests as the dreaded six arch enemies of man.
Kama, Krodha etc...are refered to the six dreaded arch enemies of mankind.
The Mind is born out of these six "arch enemies".
The mind is held firm in the tentacles of the six manifestations of desire. The entrapped mind continues its circular swirl and is unable to free itself to be able to progress on the path of self realization. Overcoming these six tentacles is the main challenge in the path to attaining comlete freedom, or Moksham.
Kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and mātsarya—lust, anger, greed, illusion, pride and envy—all have their proper use for the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotee. Consciousness and Perception take their birth with these six base qualities.
As long as the mind is trapped within the tentacles of desire, it cannot evolve to higher planes to attain Moksham.
Self Realization and attainment of higher states involves the discarding of these six arch enemies from the mind. Sounds simple at first, but the environment does not make it at all easy to discard these "undesirable qualities".
