The Paramathma and the Puranas classify DETACHMENT as one of the major tools in the path to attain MOKSHAM.
Detachment should not be confused with disinterest or disenchantment or shirking of one's worldly duties. The Paramathma is very categorical that all our worldly duties must be discharged in a DHARMIC manner.
Detachment is a state of mind that helps us to discharge our KARMA, without the illusionary burdens of OWNERSHIP and RELATIONSHIP. Detachment enables KARMA to be discharged in a SELFLESS manner.
Attachments get in the way of maximizing our latent abilities and lowers our efficiency on the job. Detachment has the effect of minimizing or eliminating the negative aspects of KARMA such as DESIRE, seeking PLEASURE, COMFORTS and PROJECTION OF THE SELF.
DETACHMENT is the process by which the Mind develops the capability to observe itself and learn about itself. In the process of developing detachment, the MIND develops the quality of becoming an independant observer of the forces within it that cause thought to move and function. In learning about itself, the teachings of the Paramathma and the Puranas come in handy in planting the necessary seeds to provide the impetus and steer it in the correct direction.
Detachment is also the means by which the Mind observes external events and interprets these events only from the perspective of learning about the self. All observations of the Mind through the senses are interpreted by the Mind only from the perspective of SELF KNOWLEDGE.
It must be understood that DETACHMENT is an evolved state of thought. So essentially, the MIND, which is born from the forces of KARMA (desire, pleasure, ownership etc.) learns to evolve out of these "formative" forces and move to the next higher level. Developing DETACHMENT is a major requirement in attaining the higher evolved state.
The mental state of DETACHMENT requires a great deal of effort to attain. It is ultimately attained through realization of the TRUTH about the self. Detachment will not occur unless the Mind realizes its true identity, its true relationship with perceived objects, and the relevance of worldly pursuits relative to the ultimate objective of attaining MOKSHAM.
The Paramathma's primary tool of permenance is DETACHMENT.
The Puranas say that the Transient forces can be identified by the manner in which they oscillate the mind between the OPPOSITES (as described under the section on IMBALANCES).
When DETACHMENT is practiced, the OPPOSITES will no longer sway the MIND.
Thought is born out of the senses. It is born without any awareness of itself, its purpose or its own capabilities. From rudimentary awareness to complete enlightenment is a long haul with many known and unknown twists and turns along the way.
Getting it to move along the right track requires many Janmas to be gone through, a lot learning, plenty of knowledge to be acquired and most of all a ton of experience of life.
Packaging all of these together in the mind, while discharging one's Karma, without getting entrapped in worldly desires is a mental circus that not many of manage to perform without encountering a terrifyingly wild roller coaster ride.
The Puranas act as the guide book in nudging us to get on the right track and stay on it. The advice is very clear, and everyone can understand. But acceptance is hard and putting it to practice and keeping it in play is even harder.
Developing a clear understanding of the principles laid down in the Puranas becomes essential to be able to absorb the hits that life hands out, to draw the right lessons from them and to steer away from the problem once and for all by making the appropriate changes to one's inner self.
In a nutshell, Thought is born out of;
The Paramathma wants us to learn about ourselves (with just a little help from Him) and transform thought to a force that is eternal, and completely aware and knowledgeable about itself.
In order to transform and release thought from its forces of birth, we need to learn about them and then attempt to convert them into a conflict free and eternal state. We attempt this exercise in the following pages.
