Permenance occupies a prime position within the Puranas. We attempt to examine the meaning of Pemanence as enuciated and also the means to attain this state.
All of us are witnesses to this ever changing world. So we are aware of and have no difficulty in understanding this transient aspect. order to understand Permanence, we could look at it as the opposite of transience. Change is easy to understand because we see it all around us all the time. We rarely see or hear of something that is permanent.
PERMENANCE IS THAT HIGHER STATE OF EXISTENCE FROM WHICH ONE DOES NOT DESCEND AGAIN INTO EARTHLY LIFE.
The Puranas say that the state of Moksham involves permanence. Does this mean that nothing changes after we attain Moksham? Does this mean that all material perception as we know it, ceases?
Our consciousness is trapped within the confines of the mind. The mind is born out of conflict, out of opposites, is very much time bound, and is burdened by its inability to identify the cause of its creation, the inability to see what the future holds and its inability to be in control of itself. So the mind is constantly grappling with forces that are not its creation and loses control of itself in the process and is swept and tossed about by events far beyond its comprehension.
Permanance implies two qualities - 1. Lack of conflict, 2. Timelessness.
The Puranas identify the ATMAN within us as a state of permanence. The Paramathma says that we will reach the ATMAN when the layer on layer of ignorance is peeled off the mind.
The peeling of the layers of ignorance. involves turning our observative capabilities on ourselves.
Put in other words, as the mind undergoes evolution through learning and experience, our consciousness becomes free of the attachment to earthly objects and ceases to be impacted by worldly events. Light, Darkness, Physical Comfort, Dis-comfort, material poverty, material wealth etc., do not impact the consciousness any longer, since the mind has learnt to transcend and isolate itself from the impact of these objects and events. Our evolved mind elevates the status of the JivaAtman (consciousness) which then pretty much becomes one with the Paramathman, which is the ultimate state of permenance, peace nd tranquility.
There are many steps to go through before this evolution happens. The effort to elevate the mind from its worldly existence is our effort. The final transition to merging with the Paramathman is a grant or endowment as a reward for the effort. This final reward or endowment will not happen unless there is a complete state ot surrender by the Bhaktha to the Paramathman.
Permanence represents the following:
Given the above, is it possible to visualize as to what Permanence means to a mind that works on transient forces?
This is quite a challenge, and the solution is to recognize all the transient forces that drive our thoughts, and work on them till they are eliminated and replaced with forces that drive thought to attain the state of permenance.
There are two aspects to every living being - Transience and Permenance.
