ATMA, KARMA and THOUGHT
HUMAN THOUGHT IS THE VEHICLE THROUGH WHICH ATMA EXPERIENCES LIFE.
The thought process is often confused with the SELF or the ATMA. THE ATMA IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE MIND. The ATMA is the observer, summarizer and carrier of all experiences of the thought process. It has a non-interfering role in this life, which is dominated by the thought process.
ACCORDING TO THE PARAMATHMA AND THE PURANAS, THE ATMA IS THE VEHICLE THROUGH WHICH THE IMPACT OF OUR ACTIONS IN THIS LIFE IS ABSORBED AND TRANSPORTED TO EITHER THE NEXT LIFE OR INTO MOKSHAM.
IN OTHER WORDS, THE ATMA MOVES FROM BODY TO BODY CARRYING THE SEEDS OF THOUGHT FROM THE PREVIOUS BIRTH. SO THE EVOLUTION OF THOUGHT ATTAINED IN ONE LIFE, DOES NOT GO TO WASTE.
THE EXTENT OF THE EVOLUTION, AS SUMMARIZED AND CARRIED BY THE JIVA ATMA DETERMINES ONE'S KARMA IN THE NEXT BIRTH.
THE THOUGHT PROCESS IS THE MEANS THROUGH WHICH THE JIVA ATMA (OR THE "SELF") LIVES THROUGH ITS KARMA (also known simply as "Life").
THOUGHT IS THE VIA MEDIA BETWEEN THE SELF (ATMA) AND WORLDLY EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES.
The Atma attains permanence and peace only after MOKSHAM (release from rebirth) is attained.
The Puranas view the mind as a vehicle for linking the individual Atma with the Brahman (all encompassing perception) and thereby make available the infinite, unchanging and timeless knowledge from the Paramathma to His devotees.
KARMA | |||||||
KARMA IS A PREDETERMINED SEQUENCE OF EVENTS THAT THE THOUGHT PROCESS EXPERIENCES.
UNLESS THE THOUGHT PROCESS GROWS OUT OF ITS KARMIC SHELL, THERE CAN BE NO EVOLUTION AND NO MOKSHAM. THIS IS BECAUSE, KARMA TENDS TO BE SELF PERPETUATING, UNLESS IT IS OVERCOME.
The part of the thought process that is controlled by Karmic forces is not the thought and perception that the Shastras are referring to. This part of the thought process has no learning capabiltiy, no ability to distinguish between Truth and Fiction and no ability to distinguish between reality and illusion.
The thought process driven by Karma is under the delusion that it is responsible for perceiving and overcoming obstacles put in its path by thinking its way through. Choosing to give up, choosing to abstain, choosing to share, and choosing Truth, choosing not to project the self, are all the attributes of the thought process that the Paramathma encourages. These need to be developed to minimize the impact of Karmic forces.
Thought's true role is to learn about itself based on the external world and the events and occurances that are experienced and observed.
ATMA, KARMA and THOUGHT Combined. ATMA represents eternity. It never dies. So it is our TRUE SELF KARMA represents trascience. It is a sequence of events that are meant to be experienced by the ATMA through THOUGHT. As a result of this experience, the ATMA undergoes a transformation that determines whether it is ready to merge with the Paramathman, or if it it needs to undertake more Janmas and go through more evolution. THOUGHT is only the medium. But it is a medium that is pulled in opposite directions by the ATMA and by KARMA. Resolution of this conflict requires considerable knowledge of the self, apart from tremendous courage and resolution to resist the Karmic pulls. Once this is successfully accomplished, by the evolution of thought, the ATMA is released for eternity from its physical bindings.
