Slokam 6
Putana on her part, manages to disguise her intent and purpose very well, and gains the confidence of the Gopies and Gopas. She becomes a part of the family. She plays pranks and gestures gracefully to win over confidence.
Putana, having applied poison to her breasts, picks up Sri Krishna and begins to feed Him.
The asura will always misuse the acceptance of the people. Putana has no problem in deceiving the innocent people of Vraja. People unused to deceipt can be easily fooled.
Sita devi does not for a moment suspect that the golden deer is not real. The use of illusion and deceit is typical of the demonic attribute within us. Like Putana, our inner demon quietly enters our inner home which is unguarded and the entrances to which are wide open. The demon usually comes in the form of a harmless temptation to the senses, such as a casual cup of alcohol, which soon becomes an uncontrollable addiction. Gambling and betting are other avenues that can lead to absolute ruin. Once in the grip of Kali, there is no more place for dharma within us.
Putana assumes many shapes, forms, needs, temptations, to entice us into complacency. Then the demon quietly consumes our entire inner self. Before we know it, we are transformed into a demon ourselves. This is the purpose and objective of demonic forces. We live in fear and insecurity which causes the build up of destructive and adharmic tendencies. We fall into a life of recurring births and deaths with no hope of retrieval.
The Paramathma is trying to do exactly the opposite. He is trying to elevate our existence, by ensuring that we are ever situated in peace, tranquility and eternity.
The conflict between trying to protect and nurture dharma within us, while being under constant threat of complete destruction by demonic forces is the Kurukshetra that is ever raging within us.
We can be aware that we are being consumed, but we can never defeat Putana without invoking the ever available help of the Paramathma.
Our consciousness is the witness to this conflict. It is actually the seat of this conflict. It is pained and tainted by this tug of war. It experiences misery and happiness, with failure and success.
It has to pick between the two conflicting sides. It cannot remain in the middle, in the undecided state. Either choose self gratification or choose the path of renunciation.
Ultimately, it learns that there is third sublime state which transcends the opposites. This state is the realization is the ability to see the hand of the Paramathma in our every move. Complete acceptance while going about discharging our duties dispassionately and yet with full dedication, is the pathway to be followed. The third state is that of complete surrender to the supreme.
