The Fallout and Side Effects of "I" on the Mind.
In the journey of self realization, the Mind takes on the identity on itself. Pretty much in every journey that it undertakes, whether it is towards self realization or some other objective, the mind takes on the identitiy. To understand why this happens, one must know the role that the "I" plays in our perception and thought.
The identity "I" when assumed by the Mind, does the following:
2. It enables the taking of "ownership" for events, property and people (including itself). "Ownership" helps the Mind to take a stance of protecting what "belongs" to it from "enemies" and "adversaries" who are trying to take it away.
3. It enables the experiencing of "success" and "failure". Success tells the mind that it is on the right track and has attained superiority by defeating enemies and adversaries and has secured its own position, property and people from being destroyed. This marks the birth and progress of human intelligence.
The following powerful allies of the "I" then take complete control of the thought process; 1. Conflict. 2. Desire. 3. Ownership & Relationship 4. Pessimism. 5. Doubt & Scepticism 6. Duality & Opposites 7. Fear & insecurity. 8. Cause and Effect. (This is the basis of the birth of the intellect which develops the ability to relate two seemingly independant events). Conflict becomes a very powerful motivator and protector of the false identity, "I". Thought becomes based on illusory conflicts. Thought is in a permanent state of turmoil. We live in a permenant state of FEAR and INSECURITY. This is how our thoughts begins its journey of life. All of us can readily appreciate that thoughts based on these drivers are neither productive nor desirable. Thoughts should originate from dispassionate roots, should be detatched, and should never invoke conflict. This is however, much easier said than done. THIS IS WHERE THE PARAMATHMA's TEACHINGS START TO TAKE ROOT. We are all in the grip of our Karma when we are born and Karma depends on the "I" to unravel itself. Much of our lives will be spent in untangling thought from its false identity. |
THE ILLUSORY "I" STARTS TO DOMINATE THE THOUGHT PROCESS THAT CREATED IT! THE MIND FORGETS THAT THE "I" IS AN ILLUSORY BEING. IT STARTS TO BELIEVE IN THE REALITY OF A DISTINCT IDENTITY THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD THAT IT PERCEIVES. THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE DELUSORY PROCESS WHICH MAKES THOUGHT LIVE IN IGNORANCE OF ITS TRUE SELF. THE PARAMTHMA's PRIMARY TEACHING IS TO COMPLETELY DEMOLISH THIS CENTERPIECE OF OUR THOUGHT PROCESS. SO, WHILE THE THOUGHT PROCESS IS BORN BY TAKING ON A FALSE IDENTITY, THE IDENTITY MUST BE GRADUALLY REMOVED DURING OUR LIFETIMES AND BE REPLACED WITH THE MORE CONSTRUCTIVE PIECE OF SELFLESSNESS (IN THOUGHT AND ACTION). THIS SELFLESSNESS IS THE PARAMATHMAN. BOTH "I" AND "MINE" ARE DELUSIONS THAT NEED TO BE REPLACED WITH THE REAL OWNER OF THE IDENTITY. REPLACEMENT OF OUR ILLUSORY IDENTITY, WITH THE REAL ONE, WHICH IS EASWARA, IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS LIFE. |
The Paramathma repeadtedly talks about "I" and "Mine" in Srimad Bhagavatham. Here is a quote (about what qualities an evolved person should possess) -"Kardamma made Pradakshina to Kaipla and went away to the forest. In the forest Kardamma spent his days in silence. He thought of nothing else but the Bhrahman. He had no more feelings of attachment. He was now beyond the plane of Cause and Effect. He reached the stage where the three Gunas are so perfectly balanced that man becomes Nirguna: without any of the three Gunas. The feeling of I and Mine had left him long ago. The opposites ceased to trouble him. The pains of the body, the agitations of the mind and the restlesness of the intellect had all vanished. His vision had turned inward and inside himself. His vision had turned inward and inside himself he saw none other than Lord Narayana."
