The Paramathma's primary purpose in teaching us about ourselves is to set our intelligence on a self sustaining path of growth.
He wants us to know what powers we have and how we need to use these powers to attain complete freedom from the material world and are able to exist in a perpetual state without any time or space constraint snd without dependance on the physical aspects with which we are born.
Essentially he wants us to discard all that we are born with and move to a state of existence which represents our true nature.
This requires that we should drop all attachments for perceived objects. There should be no dependance on objects of this world to provide us with sustenance. In order to accomplish this mental feat, we need to develop Bhakthi.
Bhakthi is not just a simple faith in the higher power. Bhakthi is the permenant attachment to the Paramathma that is accomplished by dropping all the barriers that the mind raises to extablishing an unhindered communication link with the almighty. Unless this communication link is established there is no way that we can be guided onto the right path and also maintained on the path until we reach the destination.
So Bhakthi is the recognition that the Paramathma is the primary mover of events and objects of this world. That the only way to invoke the grace is to completely surrender the self to its rightful owner. We will then carry on our life only as a service to the Paramathma with no expectations of reward or personal benefit. There should be no feeling of conflict or attachment with objects or people.
All rewards including material wealth and knowledge gained are surendered at the feet of the Paramathma. This connection with the Paramathma cannot be developed unless the false identity - the EGO is completely dropped. This is a very sublime relationship in which the "I" has no role whatsoever to play. If the surrender to the Paramathma is to be complete, the ego is to be dropped.
Remember, knowledge and liberation are endowments. These have to be bestowed by the Paramathma. These cannot be attained no matter how we try or how much we try. The endowments can be granted only when we live life in a selfless manner, and in a state of complete surrender.
When this state is attained, there are no dependancies, and no expectations. We who are born in a state of limitations and dependancies are now liberated completely and exist in a self perpetuating state of permenance and tranquility.
In order to attain this state, we have to know what powers and abilities we have been endowed with, what they are meant to be used for and how to use them.
Our experience of this life, coupled with His teaching and guidance have been designed to lead us on the path of illumination.
The obstacles in our path have been laid to demonstrate our limitations and to initiate the development of abilities to overcomethese obstacles.
As we seek inward to develop our latent abilities, we can develop an understanding of what we are capable of and how these can be controlled and developed.
An understanding of the self is one of the means (Gnana Margam) to dropping the false ego. Another path is Karma Yogam (this requires selfless discharge of everyday existence, without expecting any rewards or returns.
The third Margam is Bhakthi Yogam which is the ability to see the Paramathma's hand in every perception, every action, and every thought that we have. In the Kali Yugam, Bhakthi Margam is the recommended path since it can be practiced in conjunction with our daily lives. Actually the practice of Bhakthi margam will require intitation into a bit of Gnana Yogam to keep our intellect busy, and the practice of Karma Yogam for our sustenance
As we gain these insights, we also are able to observe the changes that have occured in our needs, wants and dependancies.
We then begin to understand that the insight into ourselves, enables us to discard these "unwanted" birth shells that initially played a very useful role in our birth and sustencance but are no longer useful because we have outgrown those needs.
It is our intent to explain in simple terms, the requirements as laid out in the Puranas, to unlock the power of the mind and enable us to shed the limitations imposed on it by the physical world.
The other major aspect of the teaching is the pointer to discarding the transient forces from whcih the mind and thought process are born - such as - pleasure/pain, success/failure etc., and moving the mind to dwell on permanent truths such as compassion, forgivance, understanding, acceptance and detachment.
The summary of the Paramathma's teachings:
Think and live without any attachments to worldly objects. Drop all desires, wants, needs, expectations and anxieties related to an illusory and transient material world.
This is the primary task in life and this is what the Paramathma constantly refers to when he instructs us not to pursue material objectives.
The learning is about one's inner self. The task of evolving to the higher mental state is fraught with obstacles and a number of hurdles have to be overcome. Guidance is provided by the Paramathma through the Puranas on what these obstacles are and how to overcome them.
The Primary message relates to the inculcation of Bhakti and selflessness in our thoughts as essential ingredients to the attainment of pemanence, eternal peace, and tranquility.
