This is the starting point and the very root of the Paramathma's teachings. It can be interpreted in many ways. The most common is the practice of detachment from material and worldly possesions. This in itself is extremely hard to do. However, one further step is to detach yourself from your kith and kin. Most of us cannot mentally detach ourselves from worldly objects. Even fewer of us can detach ourselves from the relationship with our kith and kin and human relations. Once these steps are transcended, the next and final stage would be to detach our mind from always being "I" centric. Our thought process should finally be freed from originating from this fase identity.
Many of the narratives in the Bhagavatham focus on Man's obsession and preoccupation with possession, and ownership of wealth and building relationships with fellow beings.
The ILLUSORY world of MAYA is to be perceived aa a reflection of the INNER SELF, The only purpose of MAYA is to enable the MIND to look at and learn about ITSELF. In order to perform this learning process, the MIND and THOUGHT need to STEP OUTSIDE of the SELF in order to PERCEIVE ITSELF.
The mechanism by which this is attained is that the MIND creates an ILLUSORY IDENTITY ("I") that differentiates the SELF (the observed) from the observer (which is a role that is performed through the "I".
However, the "I", instead of just performing the role of a REMOTE, UNATTACHED observer, turns the other way and begins to use the MIND in order to GAIN CONTROL over THE WORLD OF MAYA.
This is how the ATMA and the MIND become LOST in the World of Maya. THe "I", because of its IGNORANCE of its TRUE identity, desperately tries to CONVINCE itself of its own REALITY by attempting to establish control over the world of Maya that it perceives through the MIND.
The "I", which was created to enable the MIND to look at itself, becomes the main obstacle to this process and acts as a wall between the perceived world and the INNER SELF.
This OBSTACLE has to be turned inward and enable the inner self to perceive its TRUE NATURE.
We instinctively take ownership of all that we perceive. The mind differentiates the perceived world into what belongs to us (which we desire and want) and what is alien to us (that which we dislike or do not want to be associated with). The mind becomes completely engrossed in this differentiation of the world into desired and undesired aspects. Everything else is obliviated in the pursuit of these desires. The Paramathma often talks about "I" and "Mine" as the two cardinal evils. It has been said that "To people deluded by the two cardinal faults “I” and “Mine” You (the Paramathma) are invisible."
THIS IS THE CHALLENGE THAT THE PARAMATHMA WANTS EVERYONE TO FACE AND TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN.
