According to Kanchi Acharya (Maha Periyavva); "Control of the Mind leads to Self Realization and that is REAL INDEPENDANCE"
The mind is born in the uncontrolled state. It is subject to all the pulls and pushes of Karmic forces. The Paramathma targets the uncontrolled mind as the primary culprit that sets up roadblocks on the evolutionary path. Evolution of the Human Mind is the only objective of the Paramathma's teachings.
SELF SUPERVISION AND SELF CONTROL IS THE ART OF TURNING THE MIND ON TO ITSELF, PUTTING IT UNDER OBSERVATION, CONTROLLING IT FROM JUMPING AROUND IN PANIC AND IGNORANCE, AND FINALLY, KEEPING IT STEADILY FOCUSSED ON EASWARA, TO EVOLVE FROM CHAOS AND CONFUSION TO A STATE OF PERMENANCE, TRUTH AND PEACE.
Self Control is attained only on realization of the absolute truth (about the Self). However, in order to attain the state of realization of the truth (about the Self), self control needs to be practiced. This conflict makes it impossible to attain self control in just one step. This is the eternal conflict that needs to be resolved, by adopting a "one step at a time" approach in order to make progress towards attaining Moksham.
Self Control implies that the thought process should not be under the inluence of the Karnic forces that it is born with. Once power is ceded to the Karmic forces, they become self sustaining and it becomes progressively more difficult to navigate the mind to a state of Detachment. The illusory identity "I" plays a key role in providing the opposing force, by pulling in the direction that moves away from Moksham. Pulling thought towards Moksham, are the teachings of the Paramathma and the Puranas. The two opposing forces, lock the mind in a state of conflict.
The key to resolving this conflict lies in the conviction to choose the Dharmic path at all times, regardless of the short term consequences. This conviction emanates from Knowledge and understanding of the Puranas, moral values, and finally the ability to put the interests of others over that of the self.
As progress is made by the mind towards self control, the "I" recedes into relative insignificance. The fully subdued mind discards the "I". The roots of thought no longer spring from conflict. THE MIND LEARNS (FROM HAVING GONE THROUGH A PART OF ITS KARMA), THAT MATERIAL PURSUIT IS FULL OF PITFALLS AND DOES NOT REPRESENT PERMENANCE. IT THEN BEGINS THE JOURNEY OF SELF REALIZATION. THE FIRST STEP IT TAKES IS TO WITHDRAW THE FOCUS OF THOUGHT FROM "I", WHICH THE MIND NOW KNOWS DOES NOT REPRESENT THE TRUTH. THE MIND THEN REPLACES THE "I" (WHICH IS A SELF PROJECTING AND SELF SUSTAINING CREATURE), WITH AN OBSERVER OF THE FLOW OF THOUGHTS. THIS IS THE STARTING POINT OF TRANSFER OF CONTROL FROM A SELF CENTRIC APPROACH TO THE ATMA (WHICH TAKES ON THE ROLE OF THE SUPERVISOR OF THOUGHT).
THE CHECKS AND BALANCES NECESSARY TO RETAIN THE THOUGHT PROCESS FROM STRAYING INTO PROHIBITED TERRITORY START OPERATING UNDER THE ATMA's SUPERVISION. WHEN THIS STATE IS REACHED, THE INDIVIDUAL BEGINS TO BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE PARAMATHMA's OFT REPEATED RECOMMENDATION THAT "I" AND "MINE" SHOULD BE BANISHED FROM THE THOUGHT PROCESS. WHEN THE MIND BEGINS TO SEPARATE ITSELF FROM THE MATERIAL WORLD AND ALSO BEGINS TO DROP ALL ILLUSIONS FROM THE THOUGHT PROCESS, THE MIND STARTS ON ITS EVOLUTIONARY JOURNEY.
